Cloudy with a Chance of Pain - research project open to the public


What is this project?

'Cloudy with a Chance of Pain’ is a research project to understand the links between the weather and symptoms associated with long-term (chronic) pain. For hundreds of years, people have wondered if the weather affects their symptoms of pain. Cloudy with a chance of pain is the world's first smartphone-based study to investigate the association. If you have arthritis or chronic pain, live in the UK and have a smartphone, you can take part' (quote taken from the organisation's FAQs page).

The study is open to anybody who is over the age of 17, has experienced pain for three or more months, lives in the UK and owns a smartphone. Involvement in the project simply involves participants rating their symptoms every day for six months using a downloadable app, whilst their mobile phone’s GPS captures information about the weather they are experiencing. Alongside tracking their symptoms participants’ are also able to view their own symptom and weather data in the app and on the Cloudy with a Chance of Pain website, as well as view each other’s anonymous data and submit their hypotheses.

Regarding your data

This is an independent organisational study. No data from your electronic patient record held by our clinical system provider will be made accessible to the survey organisation. The participating survey organisation will ensure that any data which you enter manually on their website will remain anonymous.
