Anne Bendix has years of experience in
assessing leg ulcers and circulatory problems of the foot and calf.
All of the nurses are skilled in the application of dressings to treat
leg ulcers and manage chronic venous insufficiency – the cause of the majority
of ulcers.
Chronic venous insufficiency is the
term given to a deterioration in a person’s leg veins, a process that slowly
develops over many years, and can be associated with varicose veins, a history
of trauma to the legs or a history of deep vein thrombosis, though none of these
may be apparent.
Once chronic venous insufficiency has
been established it is vital that the individual affected is assessed for
compression stockings and given them if appropriate.
Regular exercise such as walking also helps as it helps pump blood into
and away from the affected area.
It is important that people with leg
ulcers have them managed properly to aid healing and prevent further ulceration.
It is also important to maintain mobility and independence.
